Dhaka North City Corporation has taken up a water sprinkling programme in efforts to cool the city and thus offer respite to its residents amid the ongoing severe heatwave, Mayor Atiqul Islam has said.

The water sprinkling programme was taken up upon the advice of Chief Heat Officer Bushra Afrin, he said while visiting DNCC's water sprinkling programme at Agargaon in the capital on Saturday morning.

The DNCC has deployed two spray cannons and 10 otter bowser vehicles to sprinkle water on different roads of the city, the mayor said.

He emphasised that the programme aims not only to reduce temperatures but also to lessen air pollution, highlighting its dual benefits.

Bangladesh is currently experiencing an unprecedented heatwave, the longest on record, which has persisted for 27 days.
