The government has said it will ensure supply of 13 million sacrificial animals for the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha.

“We supplied 12.5 million sacrificial animals during the last Eid-ul-Adha. Out of this, 1.9 million was left unsold. This year, we have arranged to supply 13 million sacrificial animals for the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha,” Fisheries and Livestock Minister Md Abdur Rahman told reporters at a press briefing at his Bangladesh Secretariat office.

“The festival day is approaching, and a vested quarter that always tries to take unfair advantage might try during this time to divert the situation to their favour/interests,” he said.

He, however, noted that his ministry has taken all preparations this time and there is no shortage of sacrificial animals thanks to the efforts of local dairy farmers.

The minister said that they are aware of the menace posed by middlemen at the cattle markets during the upcoming festival.

Abdur Rahman said that the government has sat with dairy/cattle farmers and discussed the demand and supply situation of sacrificial animals during the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha.

“We have assured them (dairy/cattle farmers) that there is no need to import cattle during the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha,” he said.

“We haven’t made any decision regarding the import of cows. The cattle produced by local farmers are sufficient to meet the demand during Eid-ul-Adha,” the minister said.
